St. Petersburg College recognizes the importance of equal access for all students. In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the College and its Office of Services for Students with Disabilities seeks to ensure that admission, academic programs, support services, student activities, and campus facilities are accessible to and usable by students who doc**ent a qualifying disability with the College. Reasonable accommodations are available to students who: * are otherwise qualified for admission to the College * identify themselves to appropriate College personnel * provide acceptable and qualifying doc**entation to the College. It is the student’s responsibility to provide notice of the nature of the disability to the College and to assist in identifying appropriate and effective accommodation. Students must personally identify the need, provide supporting diagnostic test results and professional evaluations, participate in planning services, and give adequate notice in requesting accommodation. A Counselor/Learning Specialist in the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities (OSSD) is assigned to oversee services on each SPC campus. The Special Needs Of A Pregnant Vegetarian

It’s apparent that your nutritional needs increase when you are pregnant. However, you only need approximately 300 more calories than normal during this time, so it’s imperative that you make wise food choices and eat nutrient-dense food. A good start is to ensure that you’re eating plenty of protein. Your need for protein increases about 30 percent during pregnancy, but most vegetarian women eat more than enough protein in their regular diets. Soy proteins, beans and legumes are wonderful vegetarian sources of protein. You need to also step up your calcium intake. Each day you need to be eating at least four servings of calcium-rich foods like broccoli, calcium-fortified soy milk, tofu, and dark green leafy vegetables. Sunlight stimulates your body to naturally produce vitamin D, and it’s probably the easiest way to ensure you get an adequate amount each day. You only need about 20 minutes directly on your face and hands two to three times per week, when the sun is weakest. If you aren’t able to get out into the sun, be sure to incorporate vitamin-D rich foods into your daily diet by choosing fortified cereals, or using a supplement. Take a look at your iron intake, as it’s a vital mineral during your pregnancy, especially the last half. Choose beans, dark green leafy vegetables, nuts and seeds, or fortified breads and cereals. You might also want to consider supplementing to ensure you get the required amount. Vitamin B-12 is also an important nutrient during your pregnancy, but it’s difficult to find in most plant-based foods. Select fortified cereals or soy milk, brewer’s yeast, and consider a multivitamin with an adequate level to ensure your body gets the amount it needs. And though zinc is difficult to come by in a strict vegan or vegetarian diet, the need for it increases during pregnancy. Whole grains and legumes are wise choices to obtain this nutrient, but you again may need to supplement to make sure you’re getting what you need. As long as you eat a good variety of nutritious foods that provide the right amount of calories for a healthy weight gain, you should have no problem getting the vitamins and minerals your body needs at this marvelous time. And though many women do choose to take a prenatal vitamin daily, they should not be a substitute for good nutrition. Develop a cooperative relationship with your healthcare provider who supports your vegetarian lifestyle, and consider consulting a nutritionist when necessary. Though your nutritional needs increase now that you’re pregnant, your pregnancy vegetarian diet shouldn’t have to change all that much. With some careful planning to ensure your caloric, vitamin, and mineral needs are met, you can still enjoy a rich variety of nutrient-dense delicious foods and help give your baby a nutritious jump-start. Be sure to drink juice, water, or soy milk if you can’t eat solid food. Keep trying to eat whatever you can. If you’re unable to eat or drink the appropriate amounts of foods or fluids for 24 hours or more, get in touch with your healthcare provider.

Autistic Siblings – How To Help Your Non Autistic Kids Cope

Finding out one of your children is autistic can change the whole dynamic of the household. Not only are the parents and the child effected, but so are the other children in the home. Coping with this problem can be difficult because no one knows what to expect. There are ways to make the transition easier. Keeping the lines of communication is one of the most important. However, you have to know what to expect.
There are different ways this situation can go. Your other children can feel neglected because you are giving your autistic child more attention. They may feel left out and lonely. Unfortunately, children are mean and their friends can make fun of them for having an autistic brother or sister. It’s important to give your other children attention and talk to them about their feelings. Don’t be shy to ask your other children how they feel about the situation. They might have some interesting takes or ideas on your autistic child and may be able to contribute to their care.
If your child is feeling neglected, try to set up time where the two of you can spend time together. Go to the movies, grab a bite to eat or just go to the park. Spending time with your child will go a long way in helping the transition in the household. Also, explain to your other children what is going on with your child that has been diagnosed with autism. By understanding what is going on they may feel better about it.
Your normal child might take this opportunity as a way to mature. Seeing the family in need, he or she could have a different reaction than feeling neglected. Your child will want to help out, teaching your autistic child, helping with everyday tasks and using this opportunity as a chance to grow. Your other children might develop a strong bond with the autistic child and want to protect them.
Having an autistic child in the house is a learning lesson to the rest of the family. It will teach them to be tolerant of people with differences. By living with someone who developmental skills, they can be more accepting of classmates and others who are different. Use this as a learning experience for the whole family.
One thing you want to try is having a family night where everyone in the house gets together. Perhaps this is one night of the week where the entire family meets for dinner or has a movie night. Any way you do it this is a great way to get everyone together and share each other’s day. Talking to your family members and keeping the lines of communication open is important to any environment. Make sure to keep your other children’s feelings in perspective.

Orange County Schools’ Special Education Alliance
The Orange County Schools ‘ Special Education Alliance was created by the 28 districts in Orange County in 2003. The primary goal of the Orange County Schools’ Special Education Alliance is to meet the need for a countywide system that can focus on special education. This includes offering staff development and training to school employees, creating leadership in advocating for legislative and administrative change, overseeing the decisions and rulings rendered by administrative agencies, offering a way to fund the litigation and appeals of administrative and judicial decisions and rulings especially when the outcome has a countywide significance or precedent setting in its implications for all students.
The Orange County Schools’ Special Education Alliance was created with the intention of addressing all the concerns of all students regardless of if the student has any manner disability. Any student that is not receiving the full services they need changed because of lack of funding to support mandates created under the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. The main problem that Orange County Schools faces with meeting this federal mandate is drawing funds from the regular education program. Funds are often taken from the regular education program to support the needs of special education students. Orange County Schools’ Special Education Alliance aims to provide the services all students need to be successful in meeting academic standards.
Orange County Schools’ Special Education Alliance plans to accomplish this goal by providing staff development to its practitioners, use the legislative process to seek adequate funding to provide these high quality services, and when necessary, support litigation to achieve these goals. Orange County Schools’ Special Education Alliance also encourages staff members, parents, advocates and organizations to get involved by using their voices and contact the local officials and hold them accountable for promises and mandates for which regular education and special needs children are entitled.
Orange County Schools’ Special Education Alliance is lead by an Executive Committee that is composed of Superintendents from different school districts across Orange County. The actual carrying out of the goals is the responsibility of the Review Committee. The Review Committee is comprised of five Superintendents regionally nominated, Orange County Schools’ legal counsel, two private attorneys representing school districts in special education matters, two SELPA directors, and one business administrator. The Review Committee has been working hard for the past two years in order to try and meet the goals of the Orange County Schools’ Special Education Alliance. Even though the focus of the Orange County Schools’ Special Education Alliance is in the areas of legal and funding, it tries hard to work closely with teachers and staff members so that its members are informed about the needs of the schools at root levels.
Since the Orange County Schools’ Special Education Alliance was created it has accomplish a great deal to meet the needs of the school districts across Orange County.

Medical Resident Disability Income Insurance – Protecting Your Cash Flow

As a medical resident, how long can you afford to be without a paycheck because you can’t work due to illness or injury? Can you afford to literally burn through the majority of your savings over a period of months?
Disability insurance is often the last thing on a medical resident’s mind. Long, arduous shifts tending to the needs of countless patients can leave little room for anything else.
Unfortunately, this lack of foresight can lead to real problems in a short period of time.
As with other Americans, medical residents have a 1 in 3 risk of being out of work for at least 90 days due to an illness or injury and a 1 in 5 risk of being out for a year or more. Because of the daily proximity to disease, the odds may even be higher.
Because medical residency is a crucial period in a doctor’s career, lost time during this phase of professional development can set a resident back months, if not longer. In addition, the loss of income realized during such an event can have ramifications that are felt far into the future. Loss of income during residency can lead to foreclosure and even bankruptcy in a matter of months, especially for the resident with a family. The inability to work plus the amount of time needed to focus on personal affairs can even lead to loss of position within a residency program.
Fortunately, medical residents have proactive options to protect their income. Disability income insurance provides coverage for a portion of lost wages in the event you cannot work due to illness or injury. Several different types of income insurance are available depending on need.Short Term versus Long Term Disability Insurance
Short term coverage generally provides benefits for up to 6 months. Keep in mind that benefits do not generally start until after the policy’s elimination period, usually 30-90 days after the disability occurred.
Benefits from a long term disability insurance policy kick in after the short term benefits period has expired. Long term benefits can last from as short as 2-5 years or until age 65. Some policies even last a lifetime.Supplemental Disability Insurance
Residents may work for an employer that offers group disability insurance coverage. This type of policy generally advertises to cover up to 60% of regular salary if you’re unable to work. Benefits from such policies, however, are taxed as regular income, dropping actual take-home cash flow to closer to 45%. Group policies are also commonly riddled with exceptions and limitations that constrain when benefits will be paid and for how long.
Employer group coverage is a good start, but relying on it alone can lead to a not-so-happy surprise later.
Supplemental disability coverage exists to very affordably plug the holes in group coverage. A supplemental policy can extend income coverage up to 100% and benefits from a supplemental policy are not taxable. This extension of coverage can also be crafted to cover conditions specifically limited in the group policy, such as nervous or mental-type disabilities.Catastrophic Disability Insurance
While other types of disability coverage protect a medical resident’s income stream, catastrophic disability insurance covers the cost of at-home or facility care during an extended recuperation period. Oftentimes, such care is left up to the spouse or other family members, which can put further financial and emotional strain on an already difficult situation.
While this type of coverage is generally thought of as being for those over 60, more than 40% of beneficiaries of catastrophic coverage are between 18 and 65.
Benefits from a catastrophic coverage policy are usually paid on a per day basis (i.e., $125/day). On Tuesday, April 20, ASAN-Central Ohio/Ohio State protested Autism Speaks and their ableist brand of autism awareness, their lack of autistic leadership, and their eugenic aims. The protest was held on the South Oval lawn of the Ohio State campus, and fifteen protesters distributed several hundred flyers that 1) dispelled popular autism myths and 2) described why Autism Speaks does not speak for autistic individuals. The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 is designed to protect Americans with disabilities (other than drug addictions) which make it difficult to impossible to function normally. This act protects people from discrimination at work, through public services, public accommodations, and through telecommunications.
Employment agencies do not have the right to discriminate against a person with a disability. If you are in a wheelchair and you apply for a job and the company hires you, they will need to make the appropriate accommodations so you can function at your job. They may need to put in ramps, widen hallways and more. An employer cannot deny you a job because of your disability either.
However, the accommodations that an employer is required to make must be “reasonable.” In other words, if accommodating a disability is cost prohibitive, will put a company out of business, or there is simply no available accommodations for a particular disability for the job type, then a company is not required to consider a disabled person for the job.
Public and government agencies are not exempt from these requirements. Public services offered by the local government such as transportation via buses or railroad lines and more need to provide ways to help and transport people with disabilities. It is considered discrimination if someone is turned away from public services that are supposed to be offered to everyone. The local government must make the proper accommodations.
Commercial facilities and public accommodations also are not allowed to discriminate against a disability. There should always be wheelchair access in malls and stores. If there are stairs, there must be a ramp or an elevator. Bathrooms need to provide sufficient access for wheelchairs and more. A commercial building can be shut down quickly if a disabled person feels there is a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.
The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 is designed to protect disabled Americans that are in wheelchairs or have other various needs resulting from physical disability. People who are very short fall into these same categories as well since they often need a smaller desk and chair or other accommodations so they can work normally. Accommodations must be made or it is against the law. You can never turn a person away due strictly to their disability or you could lose your business.
If you feel that you’ve been discriminated against, then it ought to be reported to local law enforcement as a matter of process. However, in some cases true action won’t occur unless you file a discrimination or disability claim in a court of law.

Asperger Syndrome Behavior To Look For If You Suspect Your Child Has The Disorder

I wanted to take the time to talk to you about Asperger syndrome behavior. If you’re unfamiliar with this condition, it is one of the spectrum disorders presented by autism. This particular case has the same problems with communication and relating skills, but the only difference is that they don’t lack any of the language skills. To put it simply, it is autistic behavior that is a little harder to detect because the person has the verbal capability, but just doesn’t have the desire to communicate and relate. At this point, the medical community has no idea how someone actually gets this problem. I’m going to discuss with you the Asperger syndrome behavior, so you are better able to identify it.
The thing that is going to be difficult about explaining this to you is that a lot of the behavior looks like typical teenager behavior. Often the behavior comes out when they become teenagers, so it makes it twice as hard to identify it.
You may notice that you child has no desire to obey rules or respect authority. That seems like such a blanket generalization because there are a lot of teenagers that are like that. We’re talking about a desire to skip school and not listen to you as their parents. You may also find them with an entitlement attitude; this desire to have things and throw a tantrum when they don’t get it.
The less common Asperger syndrome behavior has to do with empathy. Empathy is a person’s ability to really feel what another is going through. In this case, they wouldn’t have this ability. If they’re around people that are happy, laughing and having a good time, they could be completely aloof, which isn’t common. When you see people smiling, you just naturally smile on your own, but this doesn’t happen for those that have this disorder. Obviously, this will make it much more difficult for them to relate to others.
Another behavior that is a little odd is that they have these interests in very restricted and repetitive hobbies. This results in them having inflexible schedules and doing things that require the same tasks done over and over again. For example, to show how odd this is, you may notice them with a desire to memorize model numbers of cameras. That doesn’t sound bad, but this happens when the person has absolutely no desire in photography. They just memorize the numbers for the sake that it is a repetitive task.
Lastly, with Asperger syndrome behavior there is some issues with language. Even though they have the ability to properly and coherently communicate, that doesn’t mean they have abnormalities with it. For example, people are often sarcastic and say things that aren’t to be taken literally. You may notice that they just take the literal definition of things, instead of the person’s intended point. Obviously this isn’t something you’d expect a younger child to understand, but as teenager, they should be picking up on a lot of this.

Special Needs Students?Personal Attributes That Promote Success

Children who live with failure experience negative feelings such as shame, isolation, and anger. These students need guidance to develop personal skills that support their success. According to research conducted by the Frostig Center in Pasadena, six personal attributes form the core characteristics that contribute to success for special needs students. Successful individuals do not necessarily have all six of these qualities. These attributes are:

Self-awareness and self-acceptanceIndividuals who understand their strengths and limitations, who realize that they have many talents, and who do not define themselves in terms of their weaknesses, are more resilient to life’s challenges than those who see themselves as overall failures.

ProactivityEngaging in a variety of activities and interacting with different types of people encourages individuals to understand the power they have to create their own lives. Proactive (as opposed to reactive) individuals believe in their capacity to achieve. They look for opportunities to grow. They do not blame others for their problems; instead they take responsibility for their own part in their situation and realize they can change their circ**stances with their own actions.

PerseveranceSuccessful people see their setbacks or failures as temporary, not as life-defining. They don’t give up in their belief in their goals. When they encounter setbacks, they reevaluate, making adjustments if necessary, rather than continuing on a non-productive course of action.

Goal settingPeople who are successful have learned how to set long-term goals. They also have developed the capacity to break the long-term goal into bite-size pieces that represent actions they can take to achieve their goal. They are flexible, being open to unexpected opportunities, yet they don’t lose site of their overall goal.

Use of effective support systemsBoth successful and unsuccessful individuals have support systems; however, the successful individuals learn to set realistic, achievable goals. They learn to seek support when they need it, rather than waiting passively for help to be offered.

Strong emotional coping strategiesThose who develop ways to reduce stress, feelings of failure, isolation, and the desire to quit, find the internal resources to persist until they succeed. Successful individuals have learned to identify situations that can trigger negative reactions, they can monitor their internal reactions to sense when negative reactions are present, and they have a set of strategies to reduce these negative reactions so they can keep on track.

This first ever Patient Protection Day 2008 statewide lobbying event video was recorded in the Jefferson City Capital Building Rotunda. The stage and sound system were generously provided by the University of Missouri Columbia. Jacqueline, formerly of Kansas City, had to move to California or risk losing custody of her children. Jacqueline, who suffers from Cerebral Palsy and a moderate stutter, doses with Cannabis to ease her symptoms. A valued activist and precious asset to the Cannabis community, she was featured in Showtime’s doc**entary “In Pot We Trust”. Jacqueline conceived the first Missouri Patient Protection Day during a phone conversation I had with her two weeks prior to the event. She flew in from California to be a part. During this day-long event, we met with Missouri Speaker of the House, Rod Jetton, who blocked our Cannabis Compassion Bill in 2007 and was making every effort to block it again for 2008. Though, on the day of this event, he recanted his position while meeting with chronically ill patients and supporters in his office, he later killed HB1830 by appointing it to a do-nothing committee too late in the session for it to go anywhere. Fortunately for Missouri’s chronically ill, Rod Jetton will not be returning to Missouri’s House in 2009. Asperger Syndrome Symptoms To Watch For

I wanted to take the time to talk to you about the Asperger syndrome symptoms. This is one of the spectrum disorders that is characterized by autism. It is mainly involved in the area of social interactions. The thing about these autistic behaviors is that often children will be able to speak fine and have conversations, but it’s the little parts of an interaction that they don’t pick up on.
The idea of empathy is completely lost to them and they will often miss those important cues in conversations that usually have meaning. This can be a very difficult problem for people with this problem to fit into society. I’m going to discuss the Asperger syndrome symptoms, so you can better identify these points in your child.
When you have a regular conversation between you and your peers, there is always a lot more than talking. Could you imagine what would be lost if you couldn’t see them and all you got was a text transcript? Well, you’d probably lose a lot. There’s more to the conversation than the words. There is the tonality of the person saying it. There is the exact definition and than there is the intended meaning. There is the body language the person presents. There is the pitch and tone of their voice that can show importance. There are a number of things that are in a conversation and often most of these things are lost with a person that exhibits the Asperger syndrome symptoms.
Basically all these conversational mishaps come down to a misinterpretation of meaning and when they have these tendencies, they never seem to pick up on them. Sarcasm is an extremely big part of conversation between peers. Some people do it more than others, but through the course of a day, you’ll hear it in some form. Someone suffering from this syndrome will take the literal meaning of what was said, rather than the intended meaning of the sarcasm.
Another common one is the tonality and pitch presented by the person speaking. A lot of meaning comes out in that town and it typically is the person’s own personal take on it what they’re saying. It’s an extremely important part of conversation because people rarely ever talk completely in a literal and verbal sense. This type of important key to conversation is again lost to someone suffering from this problem. It becomes very difficult in society to function if you can’t relate with these very basic communication forms.
It is important to note that the Asperger syndrome symptoms are important, but they can be treated with relative ease. It’s not that difficult to function in society when you take everything literally. I’m sure most of you have run into someone that you thought took things too literally. These things can be taught and they can learn to function properly.

Time Management Secrets for Special Needs Parents

Over the years, I’ve studied time management books, taken courses in time management, and taught time management to clients and groups. What I’ve found is that some time management strategies work better than others for parents of children with special needs, whose lives tend to be hectic and unpredictable. Here are ten of my favorite time management strategies — the ones that have proven most effective in the context of life with a child with special needs.1. Take time for time management. Set aside a few minutes every morning and every evening to go over your calendar and your to-do list. 2. Delegate anything and everything possible. Even if you save only a few minutes per delegated task, by the end of the day or week, this can add up to literally hours of saved time. 3. Stop doing things you don’t need to or don’t want to be doing.You’re spending more time on these than you might think! 4. Allow most of what you do to be “good enough.” Chances are, your “good enough” is everyone else’s “excellent!” 5. Cut back on commitments. Drop some commitments entirely, and reduce your involvement in others. 6. Segment your to-do list into “now” and “later” lists. Long, all-encompassing to-do lists can be discouraging. A to-do list showing only those tasks of immediate concern feels much more doable. 7. Keep your entryway and your kitchen organized. When you do this, days run SO much more smoothly, both for you and for the whole family. 8. Schedule regular times in your day and week for putting things away. For example, every evening after dinner. Or every Saturday morning. Just minutes a day keeps clutter at bay! 9. Stay one step ahead of these two basic needs: food and laundry. Choose one day of the week for meal planning and grocery shopping. Choose another day as your weekly laundry day. (If you need more than one day per week for these, that’s fine – just make sure you keep it consistent!) 10. Perhaps most importantly, take care of yourself. You are infinitely more efficient and productive when you eat well, get some exercise, and get a decent amount of sleep. You’re better able to implement and stick with your time management strategies, too! Good time management means arranging your life in a way that allows you to do what matters to you most. Start using these strategies, and soon you’ll have more time for you, your children, family, friends … whatever’s truly important to you in life

Understanding What Asperger Syndrome Is

Asperger syndrome is a condition that many children are increasingly diagnosed with. It is a high functioning form of autism or pervasive developmental disorder (PDD). Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD) is essentially a group of 5 different types of disorders characterized by delayed development in several basic functions of a person.
Delayed development also includes socialization and communication. These delays can be seen as early as infancy. Hence, your child can be diagnosed with an asperger syndrome even before he turns 3-years-old if there have been obvious signs that he is not developing normally. With this condition, he will have at least normal intellectual capacity but may be lacking in the area of social development.
Unfortunately there is no known cure for this condition. There are however methods to help your child learn socialization and communication skills, so that he can make adjustments and be able to function normally.
Your Asperger child will usually interpret auditory information literally. He may also have delays in processing auditory information and while he may be able to comprehend the auditory information, it may takes effort and time for him to process this information before he is able to respond. Your child may also have difficulty following multi-step auditory directions.
Knowing these things should prepare you to provide your child with concrete explanations whenever necessary. It is also important for you to focus on increasing your child’s comprehension of figurative language skills including idioms, multi-meaning words, jokes, teasing, etc. It is found that the best way in which to do this is through the use of visual aids.
Your Asperger child may also have some sensory processing difficulties. These can result in atypical responses for your child. This is because your child has difficulty in organizing his sensory input because he may be experiencing both hypersensitive and hyposensitive responses. These responses can cause your child to experience stress and anxiety whenever he is trying to evaluate his environment properly. Difficulties in this area can also really decrease your child’s ability to stay focused.
Autistic children also have a tendency to blurt out their thoughts as statements of factual information. This can cause your child to appear insensitive but your child simply does not realise that there are some thoughts and ideas that should not be put to words. So, be aware that your child may not be socially aware of what he is saying.
It is important to get a therapist to help your child adjust socially. Your child is likely to exhibit social difficulties and will need to learn appropriate strategies and some modified behaviour so that he can socialize well. Through learned actions, he will know how to make and keep friends. In all likelihood, he is going to end up well adjusted and happier. It has been found that the greatest results can be achieved when you, as a parent, work closely with the therapist to address the challenging and unique needs of your child.

Now that we have an astonishing range of acronyms for mental disorders in children, parents are beginning to wonder how on earth we managed without all these up to now. ADHD disorder in children is now about the easiest of them all and may exist side by side with what are sometimes called co-morbid disorders such as CD (Conduct Disorder) and ODD (Oppositional Defiant Disorder). There is also the PDD NOS which is known as Pervasive Development Disorder Not Otherwise Specified. In simple terms, that means that the child may be slightly autistic.Here are three action points for parents of ADHD in children when and if ADHD or a co-morbid diagnosis has been made or is about to be made.First, parents should not be fobbed off with a brief doctor’s visit unless he or she is an ADHD or ADD specialist ! Accurate diagnosis for ADHD disorder in children can really only be made by a pediatrician, or psychologist. Resist any pressure by the school authorities/school teachers who might recommend medication for ADHD even before a diagnosis has been made.Secondly, get wised up on the “504 plan” which is the section of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act which basically says no one can be excluded from schooling on the basis of any disability they may have and that they must be given extra facilities so that they have an equal opportunity to perform as well as their peers. Learning disabilities are included and some of the ADHD co-morbid conditions, although this may vary from state to state. Facilities can include home instruction , one-on-one sessions and so on. You may want to check if there is an IEP (Individualised Education Plan) operating in your child’s school and what are you entitled to here and if ADHD in children is included. Behavioural plans, progress reports and special facilities for your child can be worked out together with parents and teachers. Whether it is a 504 or IEP, the idea is to give your child an equal opportunity to learn.The third action point is to get wised up on ADHD medications and what are their side effects and how effective they really are in treating ADHD disorder in children. While they can be generally effective in controlling ADHD symptoms such as hyperactivity they may produce undesirable side effects to the distress of the child and their parents, for example, paranoia, anxiety, depression, lack of appetite and so on. ADHD disorder in children can also be treated very successfully by using ADHD homeopathic remedies as there are no side effects. So, you’ve been browsing the disabled singles of your favorite dating sites and you’re ready to get into the game yourself. How do you go about crafting a profile for yourself that will ensure dating, love, and maybe even marriage is on your horizon?

There are five basic tips, some more obvious than others, to advertising yourself online. And let’s be frank: that’s what you’re doing! But if you don’t have a knack for sales, don’t worry. Here is a guide to getting personal.

1. Post a flattering, but realistic photo!

It goes without saying that you will need to have a photograph of yourself on hand as you join an online disabled dating website. Rarely will someone respond to a personal if it doesn’t feature a picture – it makes it seem as if there’s something to hide! So, go through your photo albums or take some snap shots of yourself and pick out a great pose. It’s best if you’re smiling. However, do not pick out a photo that makes you look better than you really look and do not make yourself look better with tools like Photoshop. As tempting as this may be, you’re just setting up your date for disappointment and it might really sour your first encounter. So make sure the photo is recent and looks like you. Ask a friend for advice if you’re not sure if the photograph looks good.

2. It’s the details that count.

Don’t talk about how much you like movies and music. News flash: everyone likes movies and music! To distinguish yourself from the pack, talk about some of your more personal quirks and unique qualities. Are you a night owl or do you like to snuggle up to a book every night before you fall asleep? Those are the kinds of details that truly reveal who you are as a person and not to mention, people looking for dating will be instantly interested in you.

3. Don’t hide your disability.

Chances are, you are using dating sites that are designed for people who have physical handicaps, but whatever the case, be up front and honest about your limitations. Your potential mate will find out about them eventually and so there’s no sense in keeping it under wraps. If you seem confident and comfortable about your disability, it will be all the more charming.

4. What makes you great?

No one’s perfect, but there are amazing things about you. Your disability is hardly a fraction of what makes you who you are! If you’re struggling with bragging about yourself, ask friends and family what they think is so great about you. Share this with daters! However, don’t type out “you should date me, because…” Instead just describe yourself, as if to be merely informative. Those who are interested in you will respond; don’t become a salesperson for a dating site.

5. It’s okay to know what you want.

Don’t be afraid to say what you are looking for in a guy or gal. After all, isn’t the whole point of dating online to weed out all the Mr. and Mrs. Wrong’s and get to the good stuff? However, be open minded about what you want and don’t come off as too demanding. Make some decisions about what is absolutely necessary in a significant other and if the list is short, then go with that. If the list is really long, well, you probably have unrealistic expectations and most people will move onto the next personal of a more low-maintenance dater!

6. Use spell check.

A large part of the population has trouble spelling and makes the occasional grammatical error. This doesn’t mean they are stupid. However, making spelling mistakes and leaving sentence fragments as they are is a big “no no” for a personal. Unfortunately, spelling one word wrong can make you appear like a total idiot and you will get very little response as a result.

Are you ready to add your profile to the database of disabled personals? If so, remember to be yourself, be honest about your disability, and let your greatest qualities shine through. When in doubt, just go to the golden rule. Would you appreciate it if someone embellished their personal with lies or exaggeration or a misleading photo or tried to hide their disability? No. So don’t you do it either!

Teaching Communication Skills to a Child Diagnosed With Asperger?s Syndrome

Asperger’s Syndrome is a milder variant of Autistic Disorder. In Asperger’s Disorder, affected individuals are characterized by social isolation and eccentric behavior in childhood. Though grammatical, their speech is peculiar due to abnormalities of inflection and a repetitive pattern. They usually have a circ**scribed area of interest which usually leaves no space for more age appropriate, common interests. Some examples are cars, trains, door knobs, hinges. The name “Asperger” comes from Hans Asperger, an Austrian physician who first described the syndrome in 1944.

If a child is showing symptoms of Asperger’s Disorder because highly visual thinking is interfering with the ability to generate language fluently then we may have child who is suffering from a very trainable communication disorder rather than a psychiatric disease.

Children who are highly visual with communication problems can have as many as 50 symptoms that are very similar and predictable. I call these children Maverick Minds.

To begin working on improving language and communication, we start with teaching visual attention skills.

In my consulting practice I teach parents methods for improving attention, memory and communication skills to replace many of the off-target behaviors they have.

Before we begin teaching attention we do an evaluation to determine if the child is naturally turning to visual attention and memory skills rather than the auditory-verbal counterparts.

When I build exercises to teach attention I use the natural strengths of each child so that each exercise is easy, fun, and successful because it is critical that emerging communication abilities feel natural and flow fluently. You will see parents y using a pace and methods that result in success. The goals of the exercises are to help your child improve daily and achieve at least 80% success consistently.

We evaluate the “just-right” difficulty level to begin the exercise so that we understand how your child learns best. There are only two rules for the pace of learning:

•You and your child should be having lots of fun.

•Your child should always be 80% correct or better.

In our seminars, we discuss how we build the visual attention system first because it is the stronger system and is often shutting down verbal development. For this reason we begin our training with very little talking, which is one step toward stopping the antagonism between the visual and verbal systems and initiate a supportive relationship. Thus, we want you to minimize your talking during the exercises. As a

result, your child will be able to isolate the visual attention system and begin to load

visual memory. The more you talk, the more you reduce visual memory capacity. So by talking during this training, you could reduce your child’s capacity from 200 data bytes to 25.

As you work, you’ll establish a tri-level sequencer. The sequencer is another important

brain function that is the engine of the verbal thinking pathway and the most underused component of verbal biology. The sequencer is often very painful for autistic children so initially you teach it as a “treat,” or what feels like a reward.

The parts of the sequencer are:

Continuous – After every correct answer, ping a penny into a cup. Feedback that occurs after every correct answer facilitates rapid learning.

Fixed-ratio – After every three pennies, give your child a treat such as a sticker, a raisin, or a chocolate chip. Fixed-ratio sequencers begin the process of self control.

Variable – At the end of your session, go on a treasure hunt with your child. Hide clues around the house that lead to a surprise under the pillow. Varying the elements of the treasure hunt helps your child transfer learning and generalize it to daily life.

As you work, you’ll begin to vary your sequencers to increase the flexibility of this component of training. After you have used pennies, raisins and a treasure hunt, for example, you might change to printing out a picture of a desired toy and cutting it into pieces. Then, you can have your child earn pennies, stickers, and then a piece of the puzzle. Tape the piece on the wall. When the picture is complete, go to the store to buy the toy.

You can also vary the elements of each part of the sequencer, depending on your child’s needs. For example, you could change the Continuous to macaroni, marbles, poker chips, or small post-it notes. You could change the Fixed Ratio to tickles, chocolate chips, pretzels, stickers, or nickels. Or you might change the Variable to

coupons for privileges. The goal is to keep your child interested and challenged, and to have lots of fun.

Anger and aggression are prevalent problems among people with developmental disabilities and constitute primary reasons for them to be admitted and re-admitted to institutions. They are also a key reason for the prescribing of behaviour control and anti-psychotic medication to this client group.
