I think this is my favorite video so far. His Irlen lenses look a lot like mine. He seemed noticably anxious when he took off his glasses, and then he read slowly. I do the same thing. My lenses help me to read a lot faster. College would be a lot more difficult without them. Thank you.

Interesting logic.
Yankee Doodle stuck a feather in his hat and called it macaroni. Therefore feathers are macaroni?
A whale shares many commonalities with a fish. Are whales fish?
The same can be said about Aspergers and Autism. Outwardly they seem to show commonalities. Yet the differences are profound. In particular regard to the pathologies.
Which begs the question, why are they combined under the ASD umbrella?
The answer is as disturbing as it is simple.
Money.

About 20 years of deep involvement in the field. from the ground up. With particular interest paid to Autism, the pathologies and methodologies of "treatment". Most "treatments" are, basically, behavior modification. Either through therapy or meds. With few exceptions, it's a pretty ugly "industry". It's a very lonely environment, if all you care about are the people you help. Just remember, it's an "industry". Viewed in that context, everything must be questioned...many times over.

Well, then, if you are so expierienced with this "industry" and know more about autism than Simon Baron-Cohen and Tony Attwood put together, get the fuck off of youtube and get some research done to prove this statement. It just strikes me as odd when these so called "experts" spend their time spamming youtube... The difference between AS and KS is that usually, there are no learning disabilities or significant speech delay.

This is NOT true !!! Yes, it may cost money, but if you or your child has ever had reading difficulties, Irlen overlays and/or lenses may be extremely helpful to the individual. I know this because I have Irlen Syndrome myself.

Aspies can still have significant issues with communication and social interaction. At the end of the day, people on the spectrum (doesn't matter how severe) often have similar (if not the same) problems and often (if not always) benefit from the same kind of therapies(speech and language/behavour therapies, etc). So who fucking cares if autism is technically different? So what? Is a Basking Shark any less of a shark because it's not deadly like the Great White?

That's not true. Just look at Luke Jackson and his family and look at a lot of autism families- there are often classic autistics AND aspies. AND Wendy Lawson (a female aspie authour) has an aspie son and I don't know about her other kids, but it's not always the father that gives it to the child. Maybe it seems that there isn't a genetic link to Kanner Syndrome because after many families have a severely autistic child, they stop having kids.

There is abosulty no reason at all to charge such explotive prices. They know that worried parents will pay anything. There is no magic cure to Dyslexic.. and i find it rather evil that this video proposes that there is some "magic 400 dollar bullet"

Afterall, aren't there forms of autism called Atypical Autism (like Retts Syndrome)? Technically, they aren't autism, but don't they have those deficits in social interaction?

Yes. There are many reasons for having social deficits not connected with Autism. There are certainly commonalities connected with mental disabilities. And therefore, there are often commonalities with the therapies involved. AS isn't always passed down through the father, true. But the number of cases involved make the passage through the Mother very, very rare. Very similar to Fragile X syndrome, in that regard.
cont. As to Luke Jackson, beware of the conclusions drawn from his story. They would have you believe that AS, Autism and adhd are connected, with a similar diet treatment. All of which can be purchased at his mothers website.
Again, the main problem we're seeing with the lumping in of AS with Autism, and creating the ASD umbrella, is that we're seeing more misdiagnosis of AS, and creating some very messed up people as a result. This only acts to cloud the very real problems and treatment...

cont... for people who really suffer from AS. And just to note: Not all people who have AS, "suffer" from it, (I've worked with plenty of people who have though.)
This is why the conception of ASD is damaging.
1. The evidence does not support it. and
2. the introduction of the big money associated with the huge fundraising has contributed to much needless suffering, and confusion.
Just ask yourself this: with all of that money raised, have we seen a better treatment? cont.

cont… for people who really suffer from AS. And just to note: Not all people who have AS, “suffer” from it, (I’ve worked with plenty of people who have though.)
This is why the conception of ASD is damaging.
1. The evidence does not support it. and

The Irlen institute is far from conning people. I was diagnosed in 1996 and was a c, d and f student skipping classes and pretty over life. I wore lenses and transitioned into college becoming a national debate champ with a 4.0 while double majoring, won industrial and graphics design awards, scouted for work and I found a surprising new dilemma in life. Being embarrassed by new found prosperity and opportunity. Irlen lenses are no joke and can dramatically change ones engagement with life.

I agree- I don't "suffer from it" either- although it does cause complications. However, all you've been saying is "there is no evidence to support that there is an Autistic spectrum" but you don't provide any evidence to support that claim, plus there is all kinds of evidence to support the autism spectrum.

Don't get me wrong- science is all about scrutiny and this "seperation vs spectrum" thing is a real debate. ..

1. Prove it.
2. I agree fully- Autism Speaks is the worst for over exageration, for not spending money on the right therapies and for using their money on depressing ad campaigns. However, The National Autistic Society do exactly what they're meant to do and I have to thank them and the Autism units they've helped to fund (in my primary school and secondary school) for me being able to learn social skills and understand people better.

...However, the more I see people make the arguement that ASD is a conspiracy, the more I question THEIR motives. And in addition to what I said earlier- I also know people on the lower end of the spectrum who also don't "suffer"- what's your point? Yes, there are different reasons for social deficits, but AS and KS are almost the exact same thing. I agree- there needs to be some boundaries to how mild autism can be, but that doesn't mean we can scrap the spectrum all together.

Does anyone have an answer to this?...If my son were born 25yrs ago when the statistic was 1 in 10,000, compared to 1 in 150-160 toaday, would he have autism?...just doesn't make since..it's too big of a jump in number for it to be even be better diagnosing of ASD through their infant checkups, and even teachers noticing the quirky or inattentive behaviours, even if it were mild..

Autistic kids have just as much imagination as anyone else, it's just different and less obvious. Perhaps they don't mimic telephone conversations or whatever, but in their heads they do. I know because I have autism.

There are literally hundreds of thousands of people who have a set of expensive Irlen spectacles in a drawer which they never use.

Ask your self why reading difficulties only occur in English speaking countries?

Ask yourself why children in non English speaking countries do not experience this difficulty/ The proof of this is that it is common in non-English speaking countries to have virually 100% literacy,

may i first address michael p's comment - "They have an instinct for the spiritual realities which escape the crowded minds of "absent minded scientists"."
are you presuming all scientists have no spirituality then? i would have to disagree about that my friend :)

my work has mainly been involved with both children and adults in this area.
i find it immensely rewarding and very humbling.
i am meant to be teaching them, but i usually end up learning from them, about life and myself!
the smallest gesture can mean so much, from me or from them. the people i work with have so much appreciation for the world around them, and very few prejudices.
one of my most touching moments was when an autistic boy of 8, who had never spoken , said 'no' in class one day! a huge achievement.
i am just happy to be able to be part of that experience when it occurs.

experience does indeed precede language. and very often language is not necessary to communicate. a glance, a gesture, or just a sense of something shifting - when we are aware and do notice these moments, we are fully sharing that experience. and it is spiritual! the impact is tremendous.

thank you for a lovely question!

Yes, the "Friendship" programme for people with developmental disabilities is run by chuches where I live.

They have an instinct for the spiritual realities which escape the crowded minds of "absent minded scientists".

"Gateway Clubs" also help people with a learning disability take part in leisure, social and creative activities in 700 social clubs across Great Britain (see link).

((VC))
As you know I have.
Yet I am having a hard time putting it to words.
I know I have learned as much if not more from the kids I work with.
My reason's are because I know above all "independence is valued more than anything"

Doing the laundry sucks but not having the ability to do it sucks even more.

When I see a kid achieve a new thing, a thing others said would never happen...seeing that realization in the kid's face is what makes it all worth it. And when it happens a spiritual connection is made...because I had faith in that kid and he/she had faith in me.

I have worked with people that have had many different kinds of disabilities. it always makes me thankful that my children and I are healthy. each individual gets different things from experiences. no 2 people experience the same thing in the same way. we can share an experience and not receive the same benefits from it as any other person.

I taught children with severe developmental disabilities for 30 years. It had a spiritual impact on me. It made me ask a lot of questions about God, life and our the American secular culture. It was one of the experiences that brought me to God and where I am now spiritually. So, if I understand your question correctly, my experience preceeded language about faith. I'm not clear on your last question. Could you please explain further? Who is sharing and what experiences and how are we not knowing it?

I worked for four years with children with autism. My main client was a 11 year old boy named Nicholas who was nonverbal. We couldn't communicate with words at all but we were very close. He is still to this day like my little brother. I love him so much. He is 17 years old now!! There is definitely a major spiritual connection there for me because a person with developmental disabilities relies on others a lot for things the rest of us take for granted. I love any situation where people are helping people. I helped him brush his teeth and tie his shoes, he helped me learn how to be a better person.

I have. I'm not sure what you are asking though. Why did I work with people with disabilities? Because they are people. It makes me feel good to help others. It makes me overjoyed when some small gain has been made. It makes me happy to make them happy. It is an extremely enriching experience to work with people, and when you can actually make a difference in their lives it is even more enriching.

This book on social skills training is useful not only for schizophrenics but also for other clients whose treatment includes the need to use role play to teach various skills. I purchased it for use in a new Dual Dx program at our agency but immediately saw its use for training staff to do more role play in our CBT-based substance abuse tx program for all clients.

As a disabled person, I find this video offensive in its current format. The video serves absolutely no purpose unless you provide the answers to the questions posed at the end by the narrator. If you want to live up to your program's moniker of "Disability Awareness", then you should at least provide some brief answers in your YouTube video description paragraph located below your video.

I don't think Aspergers is really very much like shyness. If you're shy, you might turn red etc. when you have to interact with people or feel very uncomfortable. It seems like a confidence problem or perhaps being self-concious. You may or may not know what to do when you're around people but you feel too inhibited to do it.

Aspergers is not really related to lack of confidence, rather that they don't pick up on social norms and have a much harder time learning appropriate responses.

They may speak in a monotone, have expressionless faces. This is often a problem for the people around them since they cannot read them too well and it sounds like they are lacking in emotions.

http://www.webmd.com/brain/autism/tc/aspergers-syndrome-topic-overview

"They usually lack the social instincts and practical skills needed when relating to others. Children with Asperger's syndrome typically develop a good to excellent vocabulary, although they usually lack the social instincts and practical skills needed when relating to others. They may not recognize verbal and nonverbal cues or understand social norms, such as taking turns talking or grasping the concept of personal space. They may have difficulties with accent, tone, and pitch, which can make their speech sometimes odd or difficult to understand. And they may have difficulty expressing their own feelings and perceiving others' feelings.

Shy people feel fear in social situations, while people with asperger's also have difficulty reading social cues such as facial expressions and vocal intonations, which makes it stressful and difficult to socialize.

theres more to aspergers then being shy...infact most people with that will actually go up and talk to people they just dont really know what to talk about and they have a tendency to repeat themselves and have clumbsy speach. It's a form of autism so if u had it i think someone would have noticed...im going with you're just shy

There is a huge difference in communication... just read...

Although children with Asperger syndrome acquire language skills without significant general delay, and the speech of those with AS typically lacks significant abnormalities, language acquisition and use is often atypical.[3] Abnormalities include verbosity; abrupt transitions; literal interpretations and miscomprehension of nuance; use of metaphor meaningful only to the speaker; auditory perception deficits; unusually pedantic, formal or idiosyncratic speech; and oddities in loudness, pitch, intonation, prosody, and rhythm.[1]

Three aspects of communication patterns are of clinical interest: poor prosody, tangential and circumstantial speech, and marked verbosity. Although inflection and intonation may be less rigid or monotonic than in autism, people with AS often have a limited range of intonation; speech may be unusually fast, jerky or loud. Speech may convey a sense of incoherence; the conversational style often includes monologues about topics that bore the listener, fails to provide context for comments, or fails to suppress internal thoughts. Individuals with AS may fail to monitor whether the listener is interested or engaged in the conversation. The speaker's conclusion or point may never be made, and attempts by the listener to elaborate on the speech's content or logic, or to shift to related topics, are often unsuccessful.[3]

Children with AS may have an unusually sophisticated vocabulary at a young age and have been colloquially called "little professors", but have difficulty understanding figurative language and tend to use language literally.[1] Individuals with AS appear to have particular weaknesses in areas of nonliteral language that include humor, irony, and teasing. They usually understand the cognitive basis of humor but may not enjoy it due to lack of understanding of its intent.[10]

No disrespect but you do not represent people with autism who are a lot more affected than you are- you probably have no knowledge of the issues faced by these individuals. Your message does not help autism, it propagates illusions.

@AnElephantThatPaints Real autism propaganda, you mean the propaganda against real autism? Currently there is a large proportion of children with autism that are very affected and sick, if you guys think these children do not deserve help and treatment, then you are either totally unethical and unkind in your stance or simply grossly misinformed of their very own existence and the issues they face.

@Skymaker69 We never said we were against treatment; some of us are against a cure, I personally am neutral. What we are against is neurotypical family members acting like they can speak for any autistics, low functioning and high functioning. It took AS 5 years to recruit ONE autistic representative John Elder Robinson. He has an excellent point saying that when autism is described as a horrific disease, it really hurts autistics and only causes NTs to pity them.

@AnElephantThatPaints -Right now there is no cure of autism. The children who have "recovered" or greatly progress to the point that they are able to function independently had been affected environmentally in their development. Improving their health and assisting them intensively in their learning is what has assisted them. Parents will always want the best for their children, it is in their genes. You see you child sick, you act. You see your child excluded, you act. Of course you do!

Of course sicknesses should be treated. They have nothing to do with autism, however, they can make kids seem more autistic-like, only because they have trouble communicating their pain, so therefore withdraw further. Parents need to be wary of this. And they should also give their kids interventions. ASAN never had anything against these procedures, nor do I, especially since I have received some myself. I still think AS is 99ed up, because they don't give a cowpie what autistics think of them.

Very informative.
I think when people have barriers like dyslexia they have to use their brain in ways 'normal" readers do.
I believe this "re-routing' causes them to be quite brilliant. Many colleagues of mine that I find to be ingenious had something like ADHD or dyslexia challenge them in their youth that caused them to become even better "thinkers". Creative. Abstract.
Without this "disability" they would have been banal instead of brilliant.

I am on the higher end of this so called "spectrum" with high IQ. It is easy for more mildly affected people to talk like this. There ARE autistic people who can't speak for themselves or even go to the bathroom without flipping out and trashing it when the wrong colored toothbrush was used on them at the wrong time of day. <<<just an example) I have seen severely autistic people before and believe me, they pretty much do need someone to speak for them.

As a born autistic, Im on their side. Autism is NOT a disease! Nor is it a problem to be solved. To us, it is a way of life!

As a person with Aspergers syndrome, I ask that you do not donate one cent to autism speaks. Instead support the Autism Society
